September 2023: Creating Change
How do we gain a sense of growth and progress? Weaving life is in the awareness, creation and change of routines.
I live a pattern of patterns.
I choose not to be set in my ways,
But constantly weave afresh,
And so renew the whole.
Routine
The brain loves routine. It is easier and more efficient to repeat the same pattern. From the moment of waking we run routines. What do you do in the first 10 minutes of the day? Yoga; slumber; cornflakes; organise the kids; check the phone? You could play the trumpet or watch the sky. There are 10,000 possibilities.
Awareness means we watch ourselves and notice our patterns throughout the day. Regular reflection questions, and plays with possibility – what routine might be fresh or better? Growth is rooted in an attitude of change, to be flexible and try out the new.
Changing and creating new life-patterns gives us a sense of personal growth and possibility.

Take a piece of paper. Think through a typical day. On the left, write down your routines; most you probably take for granted and are hardly even aware of. On the right, brainstorm how you could do things differently or what else you could do with that time.

Make a change. It doesn’t need to be big or ambitious, just any change to your regular routine.
It may (actually, it will) prove difficult to create change: however, there are good practical tips that help. I explain the useful ‘ISA’ method to achieve change in Being for Beginners and the Wellbeing Workbook.
