October 2023: Fuelling Up
What gives you fuel? Wellbeing requires regular input. We can consciously build patterns that strengthen us.
I watch myself,
Discerning each habit, the patterns of life.
What nurtures?
What reduces?
What might strengthen and feed?
Transforming Habits
Certain habits ‘fuel us up’. We have an inner sense we call ‘wellbeing’. It tells us whether we are growing and providing for our human needs, both physical and emotional. If we are aware and reflect on our lives, we perceive what is fuelling us up, and what we lack.
Connecting with others, with nature, and with our selves nurtures us. There are all sorts of habits that may ‘fuel’ our wellbeing. Possibilities range from joining a choir or soccer club, to spending time each morning stretching, meditating and reflecting.
take 5 …
Think through a typical day. You may already have notes on this following last month’s Antidote Notes. Briefly bring to mind each step you typically take through the day, from waking onwards. Write down how each of these habits and routines leaves you feeling.
… and an experiment!
Take/ modify one thing and create another:
1. Identity something you do every day that has become tiresome or is harmful to your sense of wellbeing. How can you change it? Can you make it fresh and enriching; more healthy? Is it time to ditch it altogether?
2. Ask, ‘what new regular activity would contribute to my wellbeing?’ Make it happen!
Note: creating change can be difficult. There are good practical tips that help. I explain the useful ‘ISA’ method to achieve change in Being for Beginners and the Wellbeing Workbook.
